I should like to treat one important question on the solution of which depends not only the improvement of production but successful solution of tasks in shaping a communist attitude toward work. Irefer to certain aspects of our planning techniques.

The essays in this collection are not confined to any one period or any one subject.

This fully revised new edition re-establishes Paul Griffiths's survey as the definitive study of music since the Second World War. The disruptions of the war, and the struggles of the ensuing peace, were reflected in the music of the time: in Pierre Boulez's radical reforming of compositional technique and in John Cage's move into zen music, in Milton Babbitt's settling of the serial system and in Dmitry Shostakovich's unsettling symphonies, in Karlheinz Stockhausen's development of electronic music and in Luigi Nono's (...) pursuit of the universally human, in Iannis Xenakis's view of music as sounding mathematics and in Luciano Berio's consideration of it as language. The initiatives of these composers and their contemporaries opened prospects that have continued to unfold. This constant expansion of musical thinking since 1945 has left us with no single history of music. Paul Griffiths's study accordingly follows several different paths, showing how and why they converge and diverge. Theorists of the Russian conservatism have made a considerable contribution to the development of axiology, the philosophy of history and comparativistics. In their studies of the local civilisations existing at different times and at different places they have focused on the dynamics of their origin, development, collapse or transformation into new civilisational forms. The best known slavophiles such as A. Khomyakov, K. Axakov, I. Kireyevskiy saw the mission of the Russian civilisation in synthesising Europe and Russia which has preserved the (...) true Christianity – the Orthodoxy. According to N. Danilevskiy, the founder of the culturohistorical school of thought, Europe has an irreconcilable hostility towards Russia. He proves that Europe and Russia are two different culturohistoricaltypes (local civilisations). He understood Russia’s mission as that of unification of Slavic peoples. K. Leontiev develops the so-called theory of Byzantism, according to which the West is doomed and Russia will be saved thanks to its Orthodoxy and the oriental despotism underlying its statehood. He advocates a merger between Russian and oriental traditions. From the point of view of the proponents of the Eurasian theory such as P. Savitskiy, N. Trubetskoy, etc., the merger has already occurred, so Russians should be viewed as Eurasians and Russia as a Eurasian civilisation. Russian thinkers were criticising the so-called Eurocentrism in their efforts to prove that progress should be measured not only by the accumulation of material wealth, but also by the development of various spiritual aspects of human beings. The anthroposociogenesis does not have any predetermined patterns, its development is of co-evolutionary, often broken, discrete nature. (shrink)

The problem "man and nature" is assuming greater importance with each passing year. There are hardly any people any more in the modern world who do not understand the terrible danger concealed in the spontaneous advance of technological progress. The well-known idea that culture, if it develops spontaneously and is not consciously guided, will leave a desert behind it has never been as thoroughly understood by people as it is today. The exceptional importance of the "man and nature" problem has (...) led to a situation in which ideas about environmental protection are penetrating into all strata of society, gradually winning people over, and becoming a perceptible material force, a foundation for the well-being of the existence of man on earth. An extension of the author's earlier works, Paths of Life and The Open Self. The primary data of the present study are the opinions expressed by college students of six nations concerning thirteen possible "ways to live." The data-collection procedures leave something to be desired, though the analysis of the students' responses is both careful and illuminating. One important result is the isolation of five value dimensions by factor analysis.
